2nd Child Syndrome? Birth Order?

 

2nd child Syndrome syndrome isn't like any other syndrome. It's a condition that is mostly found in second children. 2nd Child Syndrome is much related with the term "Birth Order". Birth order talks about a child's place among his/her siblings within a family. The child could be a first-born, a middle child, or youngest. In this case, second children could be either the middle child or the youngest. According to Dr. Kevin Leman, a psychologist who has researched about the birth order for thirty five years, he states that the birth order of a child may highly influence the child's personality and temperament thus play a role in his/her life. This surely applies to the second child who seem to be affected the most.

 

In a family, parents are usually most thrilled when having their first-born. The first-born child is something new to them, something that they have never done before. This is why parents will try to do everything perfect for him/her. They won't take any risks and the amount of attention given to the first-born is substantial. However, it is different with the second child. When the second child comes, the "new" feeling vanishes. Yes a large amount of attention will be given towards the second child, but not as extreme like they did with the first-born. As for the third child or the last child, they will give more attention to them as they are the youngest in the family. The last child is usually pampered the most. In other words, the first and last child are given more attention then the second child. This is why the second child usually has traits that are rather different than his/her other siblings. The second child feels confused of his/her identity in the family as they tend to receive less attention compared to their siblings. This causes them to feel neglected and act more irrational.

Second Child Syndrome is currently still a unheard topic. Very few people in the world are familiar with this syndrome. There must be numerous parents and kids from different families who are experiencing this condition yet they are unaware of the syndrome. That is exactly why this website was created. To increase the awareness for other people, to let them know about second child syndrome. That is the goal.

Four different groups of traits designed by Dr. Kevin Leman to figure out a person's birth order. Derived from his novel "The New Birth Order Book: Why You Are the Way You Are"

 

A. Perfectionist, reliable, conscientious, a list maker, well organized, hard driving, a natural leader, critical, serious, scholarly, logical, doesn’t like surprises, a techie

 

B. Mediator, compromising, diplomatic, avoids conflict, independent, loyal to peers, has many friends, a maverick, secretive, used to not having attention

 

C. Manipulative, charming, blames others, attention seeker, tenacious, people person, natural salesperson, precocious, engaging, affectionate, loves surprises

 

D. Little adult by age seven, very thorough, deliberate, high achiever, self-motivated, fearful, cautious, voracious reader, black-and-white thinker, talks in extremes, can’t bear to fail, has very high expectations for self, more comfortable with people who are older or younger
